Production notes: Yes, it’s a new look for the newsletter, which will hopefully makes things a bit more readable. And the ability to opt for a paid subscription is also live on Beehiiv.
The other noticeable change is that the newsletter now contains an ad. Paid subscribers will see that ad going away by mid-week and moving forward, paid subscribers won’t see an ad at all.
I know advertising is annoying. But I am limiting the ad to one per newsletter and once things settle down, I’ll work on selling some more relevant ads. But I want to keep the Monday-Friday newsletters free and this is a good compromise. And if you have wanted to receive a paid subscription but it wasn’t in your budget, this also helps support me.
The Media Habits Of Gen Z And Millennials

Precisify Insights and media industry expert Evan Shapiro are releasing a study tomorrow that takes an in-depth look at the media habits of Gen Z and Millennials.
I had an early look at the data and some of the results help explain why various streamers have been adding more mobile options as well as leaning into podcasts.
“Precisify’s survey shows the wide array of phone activities Teens and Millennials are doing while the TV is on, with 48% of Teens texting and 43% watching YouTube while “watching” television; and 50% or higher of Millennials texting, emailing, on Facebook and/or watching YouTube while in front of the TV.”
For instance, when they were asked where they learned about new movies, some of their questions might surprise you. I wish they had asked the same question about television discovery:

This chart about co-viewing is interesting, but I am curious about how much of the co-viewing on some of the streaming platforms is driven by live sports.

This daily ad provides me a bit of revenue when you click and it helps keep the newsletter free for everyone

Melania Trump Targets Jimmy Kimmel Over ‘Widow’ Comment

On Thursday, Jimmy Kimmel gave his version of what he would say if he had been asked to perform at the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday. That event has traditionally asked a comedian to perform, but this year opted to hire a magician.
Kimmel took aim at the entire Trump Family, including Melania Trump. The monologue included this line, which in retrospect was ill-timed”
"And of course, our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at—so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
That joke prompted a response from Melania Trump on X earlier today, where she took aim at Kimmel and ABC:
“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy— his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.”
“People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” the First Lady continued. “A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.”
"Melania is a movie star now. Her documentary had a score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a website named after her husband’s testicles."
"Before we go any further—Melania, this is Donald. Donald, this is Melania. That was my impression of Jeffrey Epstein."
Earlier this afternoon, President Trump followed up with his own comments in a Truth Social post:
Wow, Jimmy Kimmel, who is in no way funny as attested to by his terrible Television Ratings, made a statement on his Show that is really shocking. He showed a fake video of the First Lady, Melania, and our son, Barron, like they were actually sitting in his studio, listening to him speak, which they weren’t, and never would be. He then stated, "Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
A day later a lunatic tried entering the ballroom of the White House Correspondents Dinner, loaded up with a shotgun, handgun, and many knives. He was there for a very obvious and sinister reason. I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel's despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale. Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP
So far there has been no response from either ABC or Jimmy Kimmel. It will be interesting to see if he addresses it in his next monologue. My guess is that if he does, it will be an apology along the lines of “I’m sorry for the timing of the joke, but that’s all it was. Just a joke.”
Conservative Media Also Takes Aim At Kimmel
As you might expect, conservative media has jumped onto the “Kimmel Must Go” outrage train, especially over at Fox News:
