I know that I have ranted before about Netflix’s company-owned entertainment web site Tudum.com. Entertainment journalism is hard enough in 2026 without having to directly compete with stories produced by the world’s biggest streamer.

Tudum has an exclusive on this announcement? I wonder how they managed that….aaargh!

So you can imagine how thrilled I was just now to receive an email from Netflix PR which promised a round-up of all the news released today. And every single link in the email blast went directly to a story on Tudum.

Grrrrrr.

Netflix’s Upfront Offers Rare Optimistic Take On The Industry

While Netflix had plenty of star power on hand for its Upfront presentation on Wednesday - Jennifer Lopez opened the event - the streamer bucked the industry trend of this year by announcing a flurry of new scripted projects.

Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria revealed the streamer would be launching 40 scripted series this year from its U.S. slate including 27 returning shows. The announcements included five series renewals, four new title series including creative partnerships and first-look deals with Harlan Coben, Chris Van Dusen and Dan Levy.

Some of these moves had been previously announced, but it was still a strong counterpoint to the broadcast network Upfront presentations this year, which were heavy on glitz and light on new programming.

"More than 80% of our ad-supported members are signing in every single week. Forty-four percent of people who see an ad on Netflix, never see it on broadcast TV or other streamers. In a lot of cases, they're not even watching other streamers."

-Amy Reinhard, President of Netflix Advertising

Here are some of the highlights from the presentation:

  • Barbaric, a new drama series based on the best-selling Vault Comic of the same name. Here is the brief official logline: "A ruthless and crass barbarian is cursed to only use his violence for good, which sends him, his talking axe and a young witch on a road of self discovery, redemption and revenge."

  • The new YA drama series Calabasas from Emmy-nominated producer and writer, and creator of Bridgerton, Chris Van Dusen. Van Dusen will showrun and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Kim Kardashian, Alexandra Milchan and Emma Roberts. Here is the official logline: "At an elite private school in the country’s most exclusive town, the headmaster's ambitious daughter is destined to have it all – until she’s swept into a forbidden romance with the one boy determined to burn down her glittering world instead of play by its rules. In Calabasas, where desires are never as clean as appearances suggest, falling in love might be the most dangerous rebellion of all."

  • Inspired by the Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast, The Retrievals follows one woman’s crusade against Yale Fertility Center after she (and
almost 100 other women) were operated on without anesthesia—because a nurse
stole their fentanyl. A powerful and surprisingly funny story about an unlikely
community that dares to take on one of the largest institutions in the nation.

  • Netflix has renewed Love Is Blind, with the upcoming season eleven scheduled to be shot in Boston.

  • Netflix will exclusively host the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, beginning in 2027.

  • The teen drama series My Life With The Walter Boys has been renewed for a fourth season, ahead of its season three debut.

  • The Kate Hudson-led comedy series Running Point has been renewed for a third season.

  • Netflix will add fifteen new ad-supported countries in 2027, on top of the current twelve countries with access to the $7.99 plan.

  • Members of the winning 1999 Women's World Cup soccer tournament appeared on stage to promote the upcoming original movie, The 99ers, ahead of next year's exclusive live-stream coverage of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the U.S. and Canada.

  • Netflix is partnering with AEG Presents, the live-entertainment division of Los Angeles-based AEG, for a world concert tour featuring the performers from the KPop Demon Hunters animated movie, launching in 2027.

  • Under Netflix and the NFL's four-year partnership extension through the 2029-2030 season, Netflix will stream a week one game, a Thanksgiving Eve match-up, one Christmas Day game, a week eighteen regular season finale game, and the NFL Honors.

  • Two more original films: Grown-Ups 3 and A Matter Of Time.

  • Six new recurring guest stars are joining the fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, with production now underway in Los Angeles. They include Amy Aquino, Angela Trimbur, Elpedia Carillo, Nate Corddry, Tricia Helfer and Keir O'Donnell.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Upfronts Include A Lot Of New Shows. Most Of Them Will Sound Familiar.

Depending on how you look at it, the Discovery Networks portion of Wednesday’s WBD upfronts was either inspiring, or it prompted a serious case of Deja Vu.

Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of the Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, announced on Wednesday what she described as "3,000 premiere hours which encompasses 98 new series and fresh episodes of 127 popular returning titles."

Which is certainly a lot of programming. And many of the returning shows won't be a surprise: Tournament of Champions and its holiday spin-off, Tournament of Champions: All-Star Christmas. Investigation Discovery's Lethally Blonde; TBS's Impractical Jokers; and Adult Swim's Rick and Morty. Along, of course, with another round of Shark Week specials as well as Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl.

But a lot of new programs sound a lot like a slightly altered version of an already successful series.

Here are select highlights from the WBD US Networks slate of new and returning series:

High Value Target – NEW SERIES
Premieres Fall 2026
Inspired by the book "Debriefing the President," the miniseries High Value Target is about a man’s relentless quest for truth, a nation's complicated campaign for justice, and the bonds between fathers and sons. For the first time, it tells the intimate story of two men at the heart of one of the 21st century’s most formative conflicts. In 2003, John Nixon, a CIA analyst, became the first American to interrogate Saddam Hussein. During their time together, Nixon began to understand the potential consequences of the invasion, humanitarian horrors and geopolitical turbulence that would follow Saddam’s deposing.

Odds & Sods

  • A South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of Alex Murdaugh, citing interference by the court clerk during the 2023 trial.

  • City Eats: Charleston premieres Thursday, June 11th on AspireTV. Here is a first video look at the series. And here is the official logline: "City Eats: Charleston is a culinary journey through one of America’s most historic and flavor-rich cities, hosted by celebrity chef and TV personality G Garvin. In this vibrant Southern destination, G Garvin explores Charleston’s kitchens, neighborhoods and rising culinary voices, uncovering the stories, heritage and bold creativity that define its ever-evolving food scene."

  • Scripps Sports today announced a new local media television rights agreement with The Detroit Pistons, beginning with the 2026‑27 NBA season.

  • The French publication Les Echos has a profile of Jay Penske, whose Penske Media Corporation dominates the Hollywood and entertainment trades. Unfortunately, it is behind a $40 per month paywall, which I couldn’t convince myself to pay for. Especially since subscribing requires a multiple-month obligation.

Sean Duffy’s New Reality Series Is Even Worse Than You Imagined

You might recall that several days I wrote about U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s new grift reality series, the six-episode Great American Road Trip. When he announced the show, he stressed the show was paid for by private donations.

Politico managed to get its hands on the pitch deck for the show, and it is every bit as cheesy as you might have imagined. And given that most of the “donations” seem to have come from companies that Duffy oversees as Transportation Secretary, the chances of this project being more about corruption than informing the American public is not zero.
