Netflix has picked up a couple of Thai cooking shows for their global audience and one of them is "Bid Coin Chef," which is a wackier, more entertaining variation of the Food Network's "Cutthroat Kitchen."

It's very much the same format, although these episodes run about 90 minutes. The challenges are much more clever and there is a lot more swearing. Also, this is the first show where I've heard someone use the phrase "I think I broke the Camel's tits."

The contestants are so much more likeable than in "Cutthroat Kitchen." While they are competitive, they are also funny and have a healthy attitude towards the insanity of the show. The chefs on "Cutthroat Kitchen" often exhibit that American "Big Dick" energy that always feels forced and tiresome to me.

The show is subtitled but not dubbed. So you have to pay attention to it. But it's entirely worth the effort.

I wrote an article about neuro-diagnoses on scripted television (Atypical, The Good Doctor, Speechless, Shameless, and Special), which was a real career highlight. I got into thinking about TV as Art via the TV critics of the 00s and 10s covering LOST, Community, and Game of Thrones (Myles McNutt, Emily St. James, Kathryn VanArendonk) and have been following Rick since 2022 (funnily enough, the year after I finished grad school, when I found time for my non-professional passions again). I find this blog super insightful and helpful for cutting through a lot of media spin. I podcast sometimes and have an intermittent TV review blog still on Substack (but not monetized): Serially Engaged.

I'm Rick's buddy from the Project C community of independent journalists — and awed by his drive to make this newsletter indispensable. I'm a former public radio, now podcast story editor who works with authors and journalists to make narrative shows and sound-rich audiobooks. I also have a newsletter on broadcast history, mainly centered on radio — but it does get into TV history as well (since the two are quite related!). That's called Continuous Wave.

It's not unusual to watch a few episodes of a show and give up. But it's something else to watch multiple seasons of a show and then just give up.

One that comes to mind for me is the USA Network series "In Plain Sight," which starred Mary McCormack as a U.S. Marshal who spends her time relocating and working with federal witnesses in the witness protection program.

I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons, but then it began adding in all of these twists and turns that I just found distracting. Okay, annoying. I bailed after the first episode of the final season.

I tried to watch those episodes a few months back and couldn't make it through a full episode. As Gordon Ramsay would say "What A Shame"

I've launched the Too Much TV community and while I am not sure what to expect, I'd like to see if we can't build something fun here together.
